• Commercial Factory Cheese Box: In the 1800s and early 1900s, large wheels of cheddar cheese (often weighing 60 to 80 pounds) were cured, protected, and shipped to general stores in rugged, large-diameter bentwood boxes exactly like this one.
• Industrial Store Firkin / Bulk Pantry Box: Dry goods merchants used large-scale lidded bentwood tubs to hold bulk quantities of sugar, flour, lard, or salted fish behind the counter.
• Construction Technique: The side walls are made from a single thick sheet of wood (often ash, oak, or elm) that was steamed, bent into a cylinder, and secured along a vertical seam with tacks or staples.
• The "Primitive" Value: Collectors heavily favor the warm, original honey-toned patina of the natural wood grain seen on yours, as many of these large boxes were unfortunately painted over or suffered severe water damage in barn storage.
All wood is there but tape is on the bottle to help reinforce stability. Can be removed.
